The people behind the places

Two people. A shared bucket list. A world beyond the everyday.

We're Hank & Lynne. PlanetBasecamp grew from the journeys we took together and the wish to remember them properly: the places, the photographs, the difficult days and the small discoveries along the way.

It began with a different mountain.

Lynne had always dreamed of climbing Kilimanjaro. After we married, we put together a shared, hundred-item bucket list. The plans for Kilimanjaro became an Everest Base Camp trek instead — and that journey changed the way we thought about our lives.

Somewhere along the trek, between the effort and the extraordinary surroundings, we knew we wanted to write about it when we got home. We wanted more than the routine of working nine to five. PlanetBasecamp began as a place to share those experiences and what we learned from them.

The places, and the people in them.

Travelling together is part of the story. These are photographs from our own archive: days on the trail, time in the mountains, and the pleasure of being somewhere new with your best friend.

Stories worth keeping.

Here you'll find complete travel stories, photographs, practical notes and a few everyday pleasures, including coffee. The details come from being there: what we saw, what surprised us and what we wished we'd known.

This is a personal archive. The older accounts keep the context of the time they were written. Follow a Journey day by day, spend longer with a Place, or settle into a complete story. We hope something here makes you want to travel, explore and discover for yourself.
